A Reason To Run...

I've mentioned before that I am a runner. Not really a "runner" exactly but I have found that running is great exercise that helps me to get into shape. At least it helped me get into shape after the first 6 babies but for some reason I haven't been able to shed the extra 20 lbs. left behind (literally) by Quin.

It's strange because I have run longer distances and more frequently since Quin was born than I ever did before. Last summer I was a fitness junkie. I worked out at the gym three days a week and ran 3 to 5 miles, three days a week. I saw some results but I still carried around the extra weight.

Perhaps it is that I am now over 40 (by a few years!) and my metabolism isn't what it used to be. It's possible my body has adapted to this form of exercise and it isn't as effective as it used to be. Or maybe there is a bigger reason for my bigger size, God has some things He wants to tell me through running.

I know that sounds strange but the more I talk (and listen) to other runners I find it's true. While our bodies are working our brains can relax and "hear" God much more clearly.

In the past when I ran I did some of my best thinking, but now every time I hit the pavement it is God's voice that I am hearing. It is so compelling that I have gotten into the habit of grabbing my journal after I run and writing down whatever I have "heard" (warning: this can be tricky if you write in pencil and are sweating all over the page, lol).

So what is the difference? Why am I "hearing" God speak to me now when last year all I heard was my own voice in my head? I believe it is because I am at a place where I am seeking harder after Him & I have sought to be more obedient to Him. I was not in the same place a year ago. And quite simply, it is His timing.

His timing was the message I received during my last run. If I had lost the weight last year, I might not still be running now and then I would have lost the opportunity for God to bless me.

However, if He would have revealed Himself to me in this way 10 years ago I would not have been able to understand His message and my family was not ready to accept it. My husband would have had me committed as one of those "Jesus Freak Bible Thumpers." I am sure he would still use that term to describe me now but with respect and love in his voice. LOL!

I guess what I am trying to say is that God has shown me that my lack of weightloss has been His plan all along. The very thing that has frustrated me is what God is using to speak to me. While I have been concerned and focused with the outside, He has been working on the inside.

Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

2 Corinthians 4:16

No, I don't look as young and thin as I did 10 years ago but I wouldn't trade it for the person I am now. As I was thinking about all of this on my run the other day God gave me a literal message.......

That alone motivates me to keep lacing up my running shoes and running hard after my God!

TSMS~~Free Indeed

Yesterday I celebrated the freedom I know in my Country.

Today, and every day, I am celebrating the freedom I know in Christ.

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. ~~John 8:36

A Star Spangled Menu!

What better way to celebrate the 4th than with some patriotic food choices? Here are some of the things I will be downing today..........

RED:
I have discovered a delicious summer beverage; Sunkist Cherry Limeade. It is yummy, refreshing and best of all, it comes in a can or 2 Liter bottle! I like to pour it over ice and dress it up with a slice of lime and marachino cherries!
WHITE:
One of my favorite snacks is a salad made with mozzarella cheese slices, tomatoes and fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with a little olive oil and it is an elegant treat!!!
BLUE:
Oh there is nothing like blueberry season!! We have a "pick your own" blueberry patch near our home but you can even use frozen blueberries in this wonderful cobbler recipe. Top it with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream and wait for the fireworks!!

Blueberry Cobbler:

1-- 20 oz. can crushed pineapple, in its own juice
3 --cups blueberries, fresh or frozen (no need to thaw if frozen)
1 --box yellow cake mix
1-- cup butter, melted
2 --tablespoons brown sugar
1 --cup chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9x13-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray.
Layer, don't mis, the pineapple, then the blue berries and dry cake mix.
Drizzle melted butter over all, sprinkle with brown sugar and top with pecans.
Bake 40 to 45 minutes, until top is bubbly and cake topping is cooked through.

I hope you are enjoying lots of "goodies" this 4th of July as well. Have a safe and happy Independence Day!!!

13 Reasons I am Glad Not to be on Vacation In Florida This Week....

Today is Thursday and I am participating in the Thursday Thirteen meme. My "13" are my attempts to console myself over our canceled vacation. So here you have it, why I am glad to be in Kansas this week instead of on the beach in Florida:

1) My plants and flowers won't die from not being watered all week!
2) I don't have to kennel the dog!
3) I don't have to take a week off from the bible study I lead!
4) I won't miss a week of church!
5) I was able to have lunch with a girlfriend on Monday afternoon!
6) I won't have a mountain of vacation laundry to do at the end of the week!
7) My girls were able to participate in their golf league and scheduled ball games this week!
8) I have enjoyed visiting with friends at our neighborhood pool all week!
9) Sleeping in my own bed!
10) Home grilled Bar-Be-Que on the 4th!
11) I don't have to ride 16 hours (each way) in the car with 7 kids!
12) I will ingest fewer calories by not eating out at some over-priced, yet delicious, seafood place.
13) I have more time to spend on my blog!

OK, I would still rather be in Florida but I think this is a pretty good list. And my husband accuses me of being a pessimist??!!

For more fun on this Thursday check out some more lists of 13 here.

That's My Man!

I love my husband!

He is a wonderful man!

He works hard to provide a full and happy life for me and the kids.

For instance today.....

After going for a run and then taking the dog on a walk to the park, I spent 2 hours at the pool with the little ones. I may not have gotten a lot of cleaning done but it was a fun day.

When we got home from the pool I took one of the girls with me to the super market where we loaded up on groceries. We were about halfway done putting them away when my sweet hubby called to say, "Remember, we are having the soccer team meeting at our house in a half hour."

Chaos ensued as we tried desperately to sweep, straighten and clean the house for company.

People arrived, I smiled and my husband explained the details of the upcoming soccer season.

As people were leaving I tried to help them brush the dog hair off of their clothes.

Finally my husband turned to me and said the words every wife longs to hear from the man she loves, "What shall I make you for dinner?"

Vacation is just a State of Mind....

If life went according to my plans I would be writing this post from a luxurious condo in Florida.

Yes, this was supposed to be family vacation week but due to our "economic uncertainty" (have I mentioned my husband is in the mortgage business?) and the fact that a gallon of gasoline costs more than a movie ticket, we canceled our trip.

I know, I know, we are being good stewards with what God has entrusted us and I certainly don't want to do something foolish, like indulge in a week of fun that we will have to pay for over the next 2 years. Still though, "I want to be at the beach!!" (Could you hear the whine in that statement?)

The good news is that we are still finding ways to spend some wonderful quality time together as a family.....

Yesterday after church we all (minus the oldest) supported Cece at her basketball game and then took in a movie. Let me just say, KUNG FU PANDA rocks!! You can read Lysa TerKeurst's take on it here and here.

Someone asked me yesterday how we can afford to take all of our kids out to a movie. It is easy, just cancel the family vacation and suddenly we are feeling quite wealthy!

TSMS~~Amazing!

At the She Speaks conference last weekend we were led in worship by a girl named Lindsey Kane. She is not only beautiful, she also has an incredible voice!! Oh what I wouldn't give to be able to sing like that!!

Anyway I have chosen one of her songs to share on Then Sings My Soul Saturday. I have posted the lyrics below. I hope you enjoy the music and the pictures.

If you would like to order her CD or learn more about her visit here.

When I cannot stand
When I'm weak
You're the ground beneath my feet
When I'm down in my shame
When it's all the same
You're there to hold my hand
And help me then to stand
You take me as I am
As I am

Aren't You amazing Father
How You love me like Your only daughter
Hold me closer than even a brother
You're the only friend like there is no other
Aren't You amazing Father
How You give me everlasting water
I'm the clay and You're the potter
Aren't You amazing Father

When I'm falling out
Falling down
When I sink beneath the ground
And the plans that I've made
They all get washed away
I feel You always near
Reminding me that You're here
A voice so strong and clear
Strong and clear

Father God You're amazing its true
Like a beacon in the darkness I can always find You
Every thought You know it
Every gift You show it
Every night every day Lord I pray that You bestow it
Word after word You make it so clear
Day after day I feel You so near
Thank You from a grateful daughter
Aren't You amazing Father

You're there to hold my hand
And help me then to stand
You take me as I am
As I am

Have an amazing weekend and be sure to visit Amy for more Saturday blessings.
